Transform Your Linux Mint Experience: Custom Theme Modification Guide

Modifying the Linux Mint theme using the Pling Store (formerly known as the GNOME-Look or KDE-Look) is a great way to customize the appearance of your Linux Mint desktop. Pling Store is a platform that offers a wide range of themes, icons, and other customization options for Linux desktop environments. Here's how you can use the Pling Store to modify your Linux Mint theme:

1. Open Your Web Browser:

Start by opening your web browser and navigating to the Pling Store website (https://www.pling.com/).

2. Browse Themes:

On the Pling Store website, you'll find a variety of themes, icons, and other customization options. You can browse through the categories or use the search feature to find specific themes or items that match your preferences.

3. Choose and Download a Theme:

Select a theme that you like. When you click on a theme, you'll typically find a "Download" button or an option to download the theme. Click to download the theme to your computer. The downloaded file will usually be a compressed archive (e.g., a .zip file).

4. Extract the Theme:

After downloading, you need to extract the theme files from the compressed archive. You can usually right-click on the downloaded file and select "Extract" or use a file archiver tool to do this.

5. Install the Theme:

To install the theme on Linux Mint, you'll need to place the extracted theme files in the appropriate directory. The location may vary depending on the type of theme:

  • For GTK Themes: Place the extracted theme folder in the ~/.themes/ directory in your home folder. If the .themes directory doesn't exist, you can create it.

  • For Icon Themes: Place the extracted icon theme folder in the ~/.icons/ directory in your home folder. Create the .icons directory if it's not already there.

6. Apply the Theme:

Once you've placed the theme files in the correct directory, you can apply the theme by following these steps:

  • For GTK themes, you can apply the theme using the Linux Mint settings:

    • Go to the "Menu" > "Preferences" > "Themes."
    • In the "Themes" settings, select your newly installed theme for "Controls," "Desktop," "Window Borders," and "Icons."
  • For icon themes, go to the "Themes" settings, and under "Icons," select the icon theme you installed.

7. Customize Further (Optional):

You can also further customize your desktop by changing the background, fonts, and other settings in the "Themes" or "Appearance" settings, which you can access through the Linux Mint Control Center.

That's it! You've successfully modified your Linux Mint theme using the Pling Store. Your Linux Mint desktop should now have a new look and feel based on the theme you downloaded and installed. Enjoy your customized desktop environment.
