A last cigarette

Cigarette!

Trust me, guys, it’s an addiction that has gripped me for the last six years. Today, I've decided to quit it permanently. It’s a difficult decision for me because there was a time when I proudly claimed not to have any addictions. But now, I’ve changed so much that quitting has become a challenge. While writing this blog, I had to correct the spelling of ‘addiction’ using Google. I am a well-educated person and a junior officer at a proud organization in Nepal. I've promised myself to quit multiple times and failed, but now I've finally decided to make it happen. I know this is a difficult decision, but I am determined to succeed.

I can tell you a story. Once, when I was a kid, I asked my aunt how smoking tasted, and she responded that it was sweet. I used to wonder about the taste and tried it with a bidi, fearing the consequences. I experimented with my brother. I was too young, but those days, my heart told me it was wrong, and I still feel guilty about it. Whenever anti-smoking ads came on TV, I always wondered why people couldn’t quit. Now, I understand—it’s really hard to quit. I remember catching my maternal uncle smoking in a closed room, and my maternal grandmother was addicted to it. My maternal grandfather passed away due to asthma, and that’s not the only reason I am quitting. I want to share my experiences and why I am making this decision.

Let me tell you how it started. I began smoking when I was in Qatar. My friend, brother, and I were roommates when we joined Landmark Group in 2017. Back then, I wasn’t addicted and used to advise him to quit. Unfortunately, we’ve lost touch. In memory of our friendship and the best memories we shared, I am quitting forever. One day, we had a disagreement and I moved to my room, holding a packet of cigarettes that he had bought. Alone in my room, I started smoking. I used to smoke whenever I felt lonely, and one packet led to another. Today, I am so addicted that I can't seem to quit.

When you start smoking, it gives you a chilling experience. You like it. Gradually, you find yourself in the company of other smokers, and you don’t even realize it happening. A single cigarette a day turns into 5-6 cigarettes per day, which becomes normal. Whether you feel happy or sad, you reach for a cigarette. Despite knowing from movies and ads that it’s injurious to health, you can’t control it. The nicotine in cigarettes makes quitting difficult. No matter how hard you try, it’s tough to break free. I won’t go into detail about how and why it’s harmful, because if you’re reading this post, you’re obviously educated. But let me tell you, if you’re not addicted, don’t experiment with it. My aunt once told me, if something is known as a "bad habit," it's not worth trying. If you still have curiosity after reading this post, just ask me or look it up.

  • Smoking cigarettes may give you a sense of relaxation and a brief mental charge, but it lasts only a few moments, and afterward, you may feel guilty, similar to the guilt felt after masturbating.
  • Consuming alcohol alongside smoking can amplify the effects, leading you to smoke with each drink.
  • Once you smoke a cigarette, your body craves another. This is the power of tobacco; when you don't have a cigarette, your mouth craves a unique taste, akin to something sweet or salty, even though cigarettes don't have a distinct flavor.
  • When you can't get a cigarette, you may start to feel a silent anxiety, like something is missing. Even if you realize you need to quit due to chest pain or breathing issues, quitting can be incredibly hard because your body craves it deeply.
  •  If a friend offers you a cigarette, you must have the courage to reject it because this is not something to experiment with and then advise others against, as I am doing today. Always remember that you should never start smoking.
  • If you are addicted to smoking, don't wait for a special occasion like a New Year or birthday to quit. Just quit now, along with me. I can assure you that once you stop smoking, you will begin to see it as a harmful addiction.

If you are addicted to smoking, don't wait for a special occasion like New Year or your birthday to quit. Just quit now, along with me. I assure you that once you stop smoking, you'll begin to see it as a harmful addiction. If you're planning to quit, accept my company, and let's make it happen starting today. Take an oath for your future success and commit to not touching a cigarette from this moment onward. For those who have never tried it, remember that you must never know how it feels, because it can destroy you. Never try a cigarette, just as you would never try cyanide.
